Unfortunately it has come to pass, Paolo Di Canio has confirmed his return to English football, by his appointment, last Friday, as the new manager of Swindon Town football club. Apparently flying into England to sign the final paperwork on Monday (31st May). Evidently the opportunity to involve a globally known footballer in Swindon Towns revival campaign proved too great a temptation for Swindon Chairman, Jeremy Wray, even if the footballer in question is a well known, and unrepentant, fascist. A desicion that may ultimately prove costly for Wray, as the rumblings of discontent among the Swindon faithful are begining to gain resonance.
A number of newspapers have just picked up the story of Di Canio’s politics clashing with those of the wider Swindon community. Although up until this point his fascism was seemingly the subject of a media blackout, with the mainstream rags preferring to avoid the prickly subject of politics in football in favor of a ‘gossip mag’ style of journalism, based around a ‘celebrity footballer comes to a League Two club’ narrative. British journo’s once again demostrating their unrivalled skill, in the abscence of an official line of State propaganda, at burying their heads in the sand.
However the calling of a demonstration, by fans, in Swindon town centre this coming Saturday, as well as Robins sponsors, the GMB union, terminating their sponsorship in protest at Di Canio’s appointment, have forced a disruption to the stereotypical, journalistic cowardice of the British media. The issue of the GMB publicly showing their disgust at the Di Canio development, has also raised a question mark over Jeremy Wray’s grip on reality, that being his expectation that the hiring of a known fascist, by a football club that is sponsored by a trade union, would be considered by all parties involved as ‘not an issue’.
Who exactly is calling the demostration on Saturday, whether it’s an official supporters group or some independent fans collective is currently unclear, but if your up for it…
